The Vietnam War was notorious for its guerrilla fighting, which American forces were largely unprepared for. The Viet Cong were on their home turf, which they took advantage of by designing and installing booby traps. Not only were these inexpensive, but the bamboo used to make many of the traps did not register on the mine detectors employed by the US. Join us, as we look at the most horrible traps used in the Vietnam War.

Venus Fly Trap

The Venus Fly Trap was made of a rectangular frame with overlapping barbs that could be set in a pit, on paths, or in a rice paddy. It was composed of a metal container that was buried into the ground until the top was flush, then covered in grass or leaf camouflage. The barbs caused harm, particularly when the victim tried to get his leg out of the trap. The traps were designed to maim rather than kill American soldiers, causing them to slow down as they dealt with their wounded teammates. This was exacerbated by the introduction of secondary traps, which targeted people attempting to assist the injured. Traps and mines are said to have killed 11 percent of US troops and injured 17 percent of them between 1969 and 1970. In 1965, this figure was at 70%.

The Mace

The swinging mace worked similarly to the bamboo whip, but instead of being linked to a stick, the spikes were on a 24-inch clay, wooden, or metal ball that was activated by another tripwire. Typically, the ball weighed over 40 pounds. This was one of the more severe methods used by the Viet Cong, as when the buried ball was triggered, it used gravity to swing down from a tree and inflict terrible wounds on a soldier's upper body, particularly their head and upper torso. These booby traps had a severe psychological impact on soldiers, significantly lowering morale. They were already fighting in difficult jungle terrain, and they had to be on the lookout for well hidden Viet Cong booby traps.
