In this video, I do a quick overview/review of the Sea To Summit 10 liter (or litre, you brits :) Folding Bucket. My purpose in purchasing this product was to collect larger amounts of water to distribute to a group I will be guiding on a backpacking trip next week. Hopefully this will mean less trips in the ravines for water collection for the group. It is also a lightweight option for collecting drinking water during rainfall.
This is a wonderful product for what it is, weighing in at right around 4oz. It holds up to 10 liters, although I wouldn't fill it past 8 for stability sake. It is "free standing" so long as the surface you are setting it on is level. So far, I have found this to be true. It also features a "food-grade" coating and is PVC free. On the bag itself are two seemingly rugged handles; one at the top for carrying purposes, and a small one towards the bottom to aid in tipping.
In my mind this thing is multi-functional in the woods and I can easily foresee using it for:
- Collecting water for purification from streams or other ground water sources.
- Collecting water for bating or dishes/camp cleanup.
- Set it up as a cistern for collecting rain water.
- Heat up water in it by covering it in a black bag and leaving it out in the sun. With the addition of some tubing, you could easily create an impromptu solar shower with it.
Because it is sturdy enough to hold its entire volume in water, I can also imagine using it to hang items like food off the ground in some situations if you for some reason had to get things out of the reach of local wildlife and were not adequately prepared otherwise.
All in all, I highly recommend the product for the purposes it was intended for. Good quality construction, lightweight, and compact. My only complaint is the price. I think I paid $29 for it from Gander Mountain. It's a lot of money for a "simple" bucket, but well worth the convenience of what it does. I guess that's par for the course when it comes to outdoor gear these days :)
