How cute is the sea otter mother and pup! Did you know sea otters have the thickest fur of any animal? They can have up to 1 million hairs per square inch! They are the heaviest member of the weasel family but one of the smallest marine mammals.
Like many animals, their numbers declined greatly due to hunting, leaving only a couple thousand at most due to the fur trade. Luckily they’ve been able to repopulate thanks to conservation efforts and a ban on hunting them which means we get to have them around still! As a keystone species, without them many other plant and animal species are negatively affected.
