While all of the aliens in War of the Worlds (2005) would be computer-animated, Steven Spielberg engaged Stan Winston to create the reddish, blood-filled weeds that sprout at the locations of alien attacks.

Based on the concept artwork, you can see a snippet of the red weed sculpting process for Dakota Fanning's character in this video.
