This was a screen-used Flintmobile from the 1994 Flintstones movie with John Goodman and Rick Moranis. Volo museum acquired this car straight from the legendary George Barris’s collection.
The movie was directed by Brian Levant, who also directed “Married with Children”, “Beethoven”, “Jingle All the Way” and “Are We There Yet?” He was a HUGE Flintstone fan and had a living room filled with Flintstone merchandise before he even got the gig.
This was one of three Flintmobiles built for the film. One was stationary and had no floor for, all of the close-up shots. This Flint mobile was built on a golf cart chassis and was used for the scenes where the car would actually be driving.
The Flintmobile wheels were actually oil drums covered in a faux-stone coating. They were slightly raised above the ground and had a bicycle chain system to make them look like they were rolling. They created close to 2 dozen vehicles for the movie. Nine of them have motors and run. Another six of them have steering and brakes so that they can tow them, but the actors are really steering and using their feet in the shots. These cars would go up to 20mph. Each car that was shot at a distance, like this one, was equipped with normal break and a throttle pedals. The cars used in close up shots had to have the actors feet clear of anything, so they hid the brakes and the throttles on the back side of the steering wheel.
