Why is the U.S. concerned about India’s growing engagement with Iran? Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Bishkek, with discussions covering bilateral ties, trade, regional tensions, freedom of navigation, the Strait of Hormuz and Chabahar Port. PM Modi said India wants to “expand and diversify” its trade basket with Iran and reiterated India’s commitment to its long-standing relationship with Tehran. But Washington has drawn a clear line. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said he does not believe India and Iran are negotiating a trade deal. At the same time, he warned that no country should help Iran evade U.S. sanctions or create mechanisms that allow Tehran to generate revenue in ways Washington considers unacceptable.
