About two dozen activists from Debt for Climate and Scientist Rebellion occupied the Ministry of Finance in Berlin, Germany, on Monday morning, 17th of October. Scientists from Scientist Rebellion also pasted large-scale scientific papers about the climate emergency and financial exploitation of the Global South by the Global North on the facade of the Finance Ministry.
Debt for Climate calls for the cancellation of all debts of the countries of the Global South, so that they can leave fossil fuels in the ground and fund their renewable energy transition. This is a crucial, yet comparatively easy to take step to address the climate emergency, end neocolonial exploitation, and pay the Global North's own climate debt as the historically largest contributor to climate breakdown, whose consequences are most strongly felt in the Global South.
