October 7th 2024, marks one year of genocide in Gaza and 77 years of occupation and ethnic cleansing. Over our cheeks roll the tears of all.
In one year:
At least 41,870 Palestinian have been killed (1 out of every 55 people in Gaza).
69% of the victims are women and children.
More than 10,000 people are missing. 96% of Gaza's population is facing high levels of food insecurity.
More than 10,000 Palestinians are being held hostage in Israeli prisons under grave conditions, of which many without charge or trial.
Those are very sobering numbers. However, these numbers are a large underestimation and don't take into account the statistics from the first month of genocide, when accurate killing reporting was not possible yet, and conservative estimates of 5% of chronic illnesses leading to death in absence of hospitals. These counts also do not consider deaths caused by drought and living in plastic tents during heat waves. Palestinian voices have been more accurate than Western ones in reporting damaged buildings and consulting up-to-date sources assessing destroyed structures in the Gaza strip. Palestinian author Susan Abulhawa, reported a number of 194,768-511,824 people, counting direct killings, starvation and diseases.
We echo the call for a free Palestine and for the documentation of the true scale of deaths, crucial for ensuring historical accountability. We call for the self-determination and the liberation of Palestinians and the importance of putting their voices at the forefront of this struggle.
Today is a day of mourning and remembrance. Today is a day of outrage and resistance. We invite you to sit and ponder on these numbers, on the atrocities being shamelessly committed, documented and shared for our eyes to witness from our privilege. Because behind all these numbers are lost lives and dreams. We honor the lives of all Palestinians who have been murdered under the Zionist state and the whistleblowers who have given their lives in this fight.
