How do you want to shape the world of tomorrow with your research? In a video series, early-career researchers at the University of Stuttgart present their “Science Vision.”

Semi Kim, a PhD student at the Institute of Polymer Chemistry, is conducting research on new materials: She is developing so-called multifunctional soft actuators—flexible materials that respond to external stimuli and can move or deform in a controlled manner. She uses a water-rich hydrogel as a base, to which she aims to add a special feature: it should conduct electricity.

Based on these multifunctional soft actuators, it might be possible in the future to develop soft robotic hands capable of grasping delicate objects. Other applications are also conceivable, such as in the field of “intelligent wearables.” In medical technology, Semi Kim’s material could be used for artificial muscles, soft prostheses, or smart bandages.

The South Korean researcher moved to Germany specifically to work on her doctoral thesis. She was convinced by the fact that the University of Stuttgart is one of the “TU9”—the nine leading technical universities in Germany.
