Center for Science and the Imagination | Science Fiction TV Dinner: Akoota, genetic engineering & social control @imagineASU | Uploaded April 2021 | Updated October 2024, 32 minutes ago.
The Science Fiction TV Dinner series is a launch pad for imaginative, engaging conversations about science, technology, and society. We use science fiction as an inclusive meeting ground where people from diverse professional and intellectual backgrounds can bring their expertise and knowledge to the conversation. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we’ve shifted away from TV series and are instead screening short films by talented creators that invite us to explore a range of possible futures.

This episode features “Akoota,” a short science fiction film about genetic engineering and social control written and directed by Dilman Dila. We start by screening the film, and then have a conversation with Dilman, an award-winning filmmaker, speculative fiction author, and storyteller based in Uganda, and Andrew Maynard, director of the Risk Innovation Lab at Arizona State University, professor and associate dean in the College of Global Futures, and author of the books Films from the Future and Future Rising.

During the TV Dinner event, we screened "Akoota" in its entirety. In this video, you'll see a short clip from the film instead. To learn more about "Akoota," visit dilstories.com/akoota. To request a link to view the film, you can email Dilman at productions@dilstories.com.

You can learn more about Dilman and his work at https://www.dilmandila.com, and you can find out more about Andrew and his work at https://therealandrewmaynard.com.
