This is David Sanford's strange and fascinating "Scherzo Grosso" for solo cello and big band. Sanford is a Professor of Theory and Composition, as well as Jazz History and more, at Mount Holyoke College.
Sanford wrote about this piece:
"Scherzo Grosso is a concerto in four movements for cello and big band. It was written for Matt Haimovitz and the Pittsburgh Collective with funds from the Koussevitzky Foundation. While the influences in the piece are numerous, the main underlying thread is the memory of Ed Nelson (1962-2004), a trumpet player with the Pittsburgh Collective and a close friend of several members of the band. A simple reading of the concerto’s pairing might suggest that the cello represents the more “sacred” and the big band the “profane”. In actuality each explores aspects of both idioms, and the ground in between. The band often veers closer to “European” than “jazz”, breaking down into chamber groups at certain points. At the same time, the cello often acts as a jazz or rock soloist (movements I and IV), or as part of the rhythm section– as Deirdre Murray and Abdul Wadud have with Henry Threadgill’s groups, or Hank Roberts with Tim Berne, among others."

The Concerto for Piano, commissioned by Pamela Mia Paul, is constructed from a single motive: set of descending dyads taken from the opening of Bruce Hornsby’s song “Every Little Kiss” from the album, “The Way It Is.” While I’d taken piano lessons for a few years as a small child, by the time I was in Junior High School, I’d lost interest in playing (well, practicing, to be honest). Hornsby’s playing on this album lured me back to the piano in order to learn and transcribe some of the songs, and thus catalyzed my fascination with composing. Looking back, I can point to that moment as a launching point for my compositional career, so it seemed appropriate to use a tiny cell from his music as the genesis of this work.
Scored for orchestral winds and percussion, the instrumentation is suitable for both symphony orchestras and wind ensembles.

Hurt is a famous song by American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails from its second studio album, The Downward Spiral (1994), written by Trent Reznor. It was released on April 17, 1995, as a promotional single from the album. The song received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Rock Song in 1996. In 2002, Johnny Cash covered Hurt to commercial and critical acclaim. Reznor praised Cashs interpretation of the song for its sincerity and meaning, going so far as to say that song isnt mine anymore. The song includes references to self-harm and heroin addiction, though the overall meaning of the song is disputed and under debate.
This is American composer Eric Whitacres brilliant arrangement of Hurt for solo soprano and SATB chorus, written in 2014 and performed/recorded in 2017 by soprano Grace Davidson and the Eric Whitacre Singers.
