Episode 004 - The Dancer Upstairs

Directed by John Malkovich and adapted by Nicholas Shakespeare from his own novel, The Dancer Upstairs remains a mostly unnoticed film.

In this Scene Study, we look at the powerful ending of the film that utilizes only music and performance to communicate an uncertain future for our protagonist.

The film follows a police detective on the hunt for a terrorist leader who is recruiting innocent people to fight a guerilla uprising against the government. In the midst of the chaos, Rejas finds himself deeply attracted to his daughter's dance teacher and they form a connection. By the end of the film we find our protagonist scarred and broken, but is there enough hope and light at the end of the tunnel to bring him back from the darkness?

Join us once again for another Scene Study, presented by Film.Music.Media.
