"An ingenious banter in the art to exercise you in rigorous play of the harpsichord."
This expression, used by Domenico Scarlatti in the preface to the collection of his first 30 "sonatas" (entitled Essercizi per gravicembalo), describes, I think, just as well the sonata performed here on the piano.
