Pictures at an Exhibition is a suite for piano composed by Modest Mussorgsky in 1874, following an exhibition dedicated to the works of his friend, artist and architect Viktor Hartmann. Each piece evokes a different artwork, while the recurring Promenade theme represents the visitor walking from one picture to another.
The Old Castle (Il vecchio castello) is the second "picture" of the suite. It evokes a medieval castle, with a troubadour singing before it. Its haunting melody, carried by a persistent, gently swaying rhythm, gives the piece its deeply melancholic and contemplative atmosphere.
My decision to record this piece grew out of my collaboration with independent video game studio Cobalt Lane on their upcoming narrative psychological horror game, Imprinted. Several of my existing piano performances are being integrated into the game, notably through its in-game forum, where a pianist named Gabb sparks some of the discussions.
During our discussions, Filippo Beck Peccoz, composer and director of Imprinted, suggested several classical pieces he particularly loves and felt could accompany the increasingly dark atmosphere of the game. Among them was The Old Castle.
I had never played this piece before, but I was immediately drawn to its mysterious and melancholic atmosphere and decided to record it.
