This information is aimed at assisting new pilots or part 107 pilots who have reached a plateau in their workload. Many individuals express the belief that the market is saturated and finding part 107 work is challenging. One of the crucial factors is having a strong portfolio. Understanding your own value is equally important. Initially, being willing to work for free or at lower rates can help in building that portfolio.
While a select few top-tier pilots can earn significant amounts by flying drones for commercial projects, this isn't the case for me. I operate a small business, primarily driven by my passion for creating artistic videos through FPV recording and editing. My journey with drones started in 2013, but I integrated them into my videography and drone business, named "Top Shots Media," in 2021.
About 50% of the projects I handle require investments in professional video equipment and skillful editing. If you're not among the top-tier drone pilots with an exceptional portfolio, it's more likely that you'll be working on smaller jobs. However, you can substantially increase your rates by offering comprehensive services such as scriptwriting, filming with high-quality ground equipment, and showcasing your editing expertise.
For those already engaged in this line of work, I commend your efforts and encourage you to continue excelling. But if you aspire to elevate your business, focusing on these strategies is the way forward unless you are part of the top 1% of drone pilots who can solely rely on drone footage to secure high-paying projects.
