What makes a good judge - years of courtroom experience, or rigorous training before taking the Bench?
The Supreme Court has significantly changed the rules for entry-level judicial recruitment. After mandating three years of practice at the Bar in 2025, the Court has now moved to a new model combining one year of practice, one year of Judicial Academy training, and one year of supervised Law Clerkship.
The majority says three years at the Bar does not necessarily translate into meaningful courtroom experience. Justice K. Vinod Chandran, in dissent, warned against creating a “cadre of careerists rather than jurists”.
