There’s a lot of confusion in the locksmith and construction industry right now around Lockwood MT5, MT5+, and MTL800 — so in this video I break it down clearly.
MT5 is being phased out.
Lockwood has officially commenced the End-of-Life (EOL) process for the MT5 platform due to expired legal protection and a limited installed base.
MT5+ is NOT discontinued.
Support for MT5+ remains active, and Lockwood will continue to support this platform without interruption.
What’s happening now:
Existing MT5 barrels will continue to be sold until stock is fully depleted or no longer commercially viable
Once stock runs out, MT5 components will be marked obsolete
A further formal notice will be issued at that time
MTL800 is the long-term solution.
Lockwood is strongly encouraging all MT5 users to transition to MTL800, which:
Is patented until 2039
Has active legal protection
Uses MTL800 keys only (MT5 / MT5+ keys were discontinued at the end of 2023)
Is backward-compatible with both MT5 and MT5+ systems — meaning you can upgrade without replacing everything at once
In this video, I explain:
What this change really means for locksmiths and customers
Which systems are still supported
Why MTL800 is the only future-proof option
How to transition existing MT5 and MT5+ systems safely
If you’re a locksmith, builder, facility manager, or specifier — this is information you need to know before quoting or installing Lockwood restricted systems.
