BBSRC | Saving #AshTrees with a Simple Facebook Game: #Fraxinus @bbsrcmedia | Uploaded August 2013 | Updated October 2024, 7 hours ago.
In this fascinating video, we explore how playing a simple Facebook game could help save the ash tree from extinction.

Developed by scientists from The Sainsbury Laboratory and Sheffield-based gaming company Team Cooper, the game 'Fraxinus' uses real genetic data from the fungus which causes Chalara ash dieback and from the common ash, Fraxinus excelsior.

By matching and rearranging patterns of coloured leaf shapes, players help to analyse the genetic data and identify natural resistance to the disease. This innovative use of gaming technology is part of a rapid response to ash dieback funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), which aims to understand more about the disease and find ways to mitigate its effects.

Join us as we explore the potential of this new approach and what it means for the future of tree conservation. Don't forget to share and embed this video with credit to BBSRC.
