Sun, Earth and Saturn are moving into a remarkable alignment as Saturn approaches opposition on October 4, 2026. This will give us the biggest, brightest and longest view of Saturn this year.
During opposition, Earth passes between the Sun and Saturn. From our viewpoint, Saturn appears opposite the Sun in the sky. It rises around sunset, remains visible almost the entire night and reaches its highest point around midnight.

I have already started photographing Saturn through my telescope, and in this video, I will show you my latest picture and explain what we can expect as opposition approaches.
We will explore:
🪐 Why Saturn appears larger and brighter
🌍 How Earth moves between the Sun and Saturn
☀️ Why Saturn’s visible hemisphere becomes fully illuminated
🔭 When and where to observe Saturn
💫 Why Saturn’s rings may temporarily brighten
📸 How I am preparing to photograph the 2026 opposition
The rings can experience an additional brightening near opposition called the Seeliger effect. Shadows between the countless ring particles become hidden from our viewing angle, allowing the rings to appear unusually bright.
You do not need to wait until October 4 to begin observing. Saturn’s viewing conditions will continue improving over the coming weeks, and the best observing window lasts for several weeks around opposition.
Subscribe and turn on notifications as we track Saturn, photograph its rings and prepare the telescopes for one of the best planetary observing opportunities of 2026.

![Blood Moon 2026 | The Moon Is About to Turn Red | When to Look Up
On Thursday night, the Moon slides into Earths shadow and turns
a deep red. Heres exactly when to look up, what youll see at
each stage, and why it happens at all.
Everything below is Central Time. Convert for your location.
⏱ ECLIPSE TIMELINE — Thursday, August 27 (Central Time)
Penumbral begins — 8:23 PM CDT / 01:23 UTC
The Moon dims slightly. Subtle — most people miss it.
Partial (umbral) begins — 9:33 PM CDT / 02:33 UTC
Earths shadow takes a visible bite out of the Moon.
Maximum eclipse — 11:12 PM CDT / 04:12 UTC
Peak color. 96.3% of the Moon inside Earths umbra.
Partial ends — 12:51 AM CDT / 05:51 UTC
Penumbral ends — 2:01 AM CDT / 07:01 UTC
Eastern: add 1 hour. Mountain: subtract 1. Pacific: subtract 2.
This is a deep partial eclipse — a thin bright sliver stays lit
at maximum. Its the deepest partial lunar eclipse until
December 31, 2028.
Peak color. [96%] coverage from the Leander / Austin area.
Visible across North America, South America, and Canada.
🔴 WHY DOES THE MOON TURN RED?
The Moon isnt losing all its light — its losing all its BLUE
light. Sunlight passing through the edge of Earths atmosphere
gets scattered, and blue scatters away first. Only the red
wavelengths bend through and reach the lunar surface.
Youre watching every sunrise and sunset on Earth, projected
onto the Moon at once.
