Drive the crime out of New York City! After years on the squad, undercover detective John Tanner is taking the law into his own hands. Experience a dark and thrilling investigation. Take down your enemies in high speed car chases. Over 100 missions and challenges!
One of the earlier games released for the 3DS and quite surprising to see on a Nintendo console at this time considering how dark the game is and the amount of profanities thrown around throughout the game. Its a far cry from Mario Kart 7 which hadnt been released yet at this point. Its worth pointing out that the games map looks suspiciously reused from VDs previous game COP: The Recruit on the DS.
The game is set between the two original driver games. Tanner is presented as a cliché movie action hero with a very predictable plot. The game mainly has you driving around a a sparse New York City with plenty of destroyable scenery. The missions consist of out running the enemy, chasing the enemy and or destroying the enemy. You destroy enemies by ramming them. You can earn boost by destroying things, drifting or jumping to power up a rage meter that lets you do more damage or turbo boost. The control feels quite floaty and oversensitive which makes it challenging to get the car going in a straight line at times.
Part 2 of this longplay is the career mode of the game. This is a throw away part of the game and is just added fluff to fill out the cartridge and its very short story mode. Its is made up of seven game modes each containing twelve missions for a total of eight four missions overall. Along the way extra cars are unlocked giving a total of fifty cars in the garage if story mode is completed and these cars can only be used in career mode. The opponent drivers are dumb as dirt and make some of the longer races really boring. It can also be annoying that an event wont end when you have reach the set target and continues on until time has run out. The overall score is mostly irrelevant as the only thing that matters is that you achieved the mission goal. Nothing happens when you complete all missions and reach max level leaving this mode ultimately unrewarding and pointless.
