PlayStation sent over Saros for review, and this is the follow-up to Returnal, taking what worked there and expanding on it and it absolutely succeeds in doing that.

Without spoiling the plot, Saros follows Arjun Devraj, who is searching for his wife on an alien planet. Along the way, there are some twists, and while the story itself isn’t a standout, the real star here is the gameplay.

The gameplay has you running, jumping, shooting, dodging, using a shield, grappling hook, and melee attacks to complete each biome. As you unlock each ability, it builds into a full toolkit that takes real mastery to overcome the challenges ahead and defeat bosses. Once you learn how to counter and dodge enemy attacks, you start to feel unstoppable and begin hunting enemies instead of just reacting to them.

There are also artifacts you can pick up some with benefits, others with drawbacks. It’s up to you how you build your character each run, as this is a roguelike. Housemarque has also added a skill tree, giving you progression so each run starts with more of a foundation. And while Returnal may have been more difficult overall, Saros is still no joke for most players.

For added challenge or accessibility they’ve included trial and protection systems. Trials increase difficulty, while protections make things easier. Players are meant to balance these systems, unless they choose to bypass them in the settings, which the developers don’t recommend for the intended experience.

The sound design, haptics, art, and character designs are fantastic, with a strong variety of enemy types, weapons, and skills that keep each run feeling fresh and exciting.

Overall, while Saros may not stand out narratively, it more than makes up for it in every other category and it left me wanting to keep playing long after finishing the campaign.
I give Saros a 9 out of 10, and as it stands, it’s a Game of the Year contender.
