Sand Dancer. A short stop-motion animation I made for the class I’m teaching through the Dogbotic creative workshop program. The “sand” is actually wheat flour. The dancer is made of sticks and stones.
This is technically rotoscoping. I video projected footage of a dancer onto the flour, and matched my literal stick-figure as best I could to the dancer’s body.
For each frame I had to turn off the main light, unblock the projector lens, advance the video footage, reposition the sticks with tweezers, block the projector lens again, turn on the main light, and take a photo. Repeat 115 times.
For music, I used a kalimba and a viola—two instruments that I can’t really play. The sand sound was actually some quinoa being brushed around. Callie Day recorded it.
