UPDATE, 10-10-25, Below is a partial update obtained from the Sea Girt Police Department through an Open Public Records Act request. This information was written by SGPD on 10-4-25.
“At this time, no evidence suggests the sailboat is stolen or involved in criminal activity. Ownership history has been confirmed through documentation and statements. Although a formal transfer of ownership to Lawrence C. Kaehler has not been completed, both involved parties acknowledge an agreement is in place.”
UPDATE, 10-10-25, The following theft report was filed by SGPD on 10-2-25
“On the above date and time Patrols were dispatched to 2 Ocean Ave for a report of a stolen steering wheel from the beached sailboat. Upon arrival patrols met with the attached who stated he took his steering wheel off and did not leave it on the boat. The steering wheel is stainless steel with white tape around it with a 9 in circumference of electrical tape in the middle. Larry stated he believes it went missing yesterday 10/01/2025 between 1745-1800 hrs.
“I notified Chief who forwarded me a picture of a subject walking away with the wheel off the beach. I then contacted Chief Lifeguard Harmon who sent me images of the same subject on the beach and the boardwalk walking with the wheel.
“Patrols went to two different residences to make contact with a subject to which we believe may have taken the steering wheel but had no results. Nothing further at this time.”

Lawrence Kaehler, a sailor from Orlando, Florida, ran aground in Sea Girt, New Jersey. He sailed around Manhattan and heading south to Cocoa Beach, Florida. Story shot with iPhone 15 Pro Max, 4K 60p with the Sennheiser AVX wireless kit plugged to iRig Pre connected to the iPhone. I monitored with the Sony MDR-7506 headphone. I edited with Final Cut Pro on a MacBook Pro.
