After Hurricanes Helene and Milton devastated parts of the southeastern United States over a span of just two weeks in September and October 2024, safety officials are warning the public about the fire risk of an electric vehicle (EV) that has been submerged in water.
In this video, Andrew Klock, senior manager of Training & Development at NFPA, provides an overview of how submersion in water—especially saltwater—can damage the lithium-ion batteries that power many of today's EVs and some steps that can be taken to help people stay safer.
