One safe way to lock a 2-stroke engine for jobs like removing the clutch or flywheel is by using the rope trick. Here’s how it works:

Remove the spark plug so you have access directly into the combustion chamber.

Take a length of clean, soft recoil starter rope (never anything hard or dirty that could damage the piston or bore).

Feed the rope gently into the spark plug hole — about 6–8 inches at a time — until the cylinder is comfortably filled. Make sure you leave enough sticking out so you can pull it back out later.

Now, when you turn the crankshaft, the piston will rise and compress against the rope. The soft rope cushions the piston, effectively locking the crankshaft without risking damage to the piston crown, rings, or cylinder wall.

Once you’ve finished your work, simply pull the rope back out.

Safety notes:

Always make sure the piston is partway up the bore before inserting the rope — don’t try this with the piston all the way at bottom dead centre, otherwise the ports could snag the rope.

Never use anything hard like screwdrivers or bolts — only soft rope, as it won’t damage the engine.

Double-check that all the rope is removed before reinstalling the spark plug.

Thank you
