From the depths of the sea, all the way up to the sky and the islands in between, complex habitats and wildlife need our help. Everything is connected — fish depend on coral reefs for food and shelter, seabirds depend on fish for food, and coral reefs benefit from the nutrients in seabird guano.
Unsustainable fisheries, rising temperatures, water pollution, and more threaten the balance of this ecosystem, with grim consequences for seabirds. Collectively, seabirds are the most endangered group of birds in the world. In the albatross family, for example, 15 of 22 species are threatened with extinction — largely driven by incidental bycatch from fisheries.
American Bird Conservancy and our partners are working to address these threats and develop sustainable seascapes that benefit marine life and people. In Ecuador, fishers are adopting a technique that reduces bycatch of birds like the Waved Albatross. And in the South Pacific, island states are working to restore sea forests that will benefit coral reefs, many seabird species, and other wildlife.
