Here is my solo piano interpretation of “Sadness and Sorrow”, one of the most touching and iconic tracks from the Naruto soundtrack. Composed by Toshio Masuda, this theme has accompanied some of the series’ most emotional and unforgettable moments.
In my arrangement I tried to imitate the sounds of traditional Japanese string instruments such as the Shamisen or the Koto. So I composed a little introduction consisting of the C, D and G major pentatonic scales over different bass tones and in different rapid figurations to create a traditional, Koto-like sound effect. I included some elements from the introduction as fillers between the phrases and in the coda.
