A group of Nashville's greatest songwriters gathered one afternoon, to play and sing for me some of the saddest country songs they had ever written. I was doing a story related to a U. of Minnesota research project that concluded people drink more when listening to slow sad country songs. In the room were Roger Miller, Bobby Braddock, Red Lane, a young pre- Brooks and Dunn Kix Brooks, and two other writers whose names I've since forgotten. Unfortunately I don't have the outtakes, which have each of the guys singing, but here is the story from that incredible afternoon more than 20 years ago.
