Distinct computational roles of excitatory and inhibitory neurons in the macaque inferior temporal cortex for core object recognition

Excitation–inhibition balance is central to cortical computation, but the roles of each population remain unclear. I show that excitatory and inhibitory neurons make distinct, complementary contributions to neural representations and object recognition behavior, providing a framework for studying E/I imbalance in autism.
