한국 컨테이너, 북극항로 첫 도전, 기대효과

Welcome to Tuesday's edition of Press Perspective for SEPTEMBER FIRST here in Seoul.
I'm Min Sun-hee.
With the Arctic route reshaping the map of global trade South Korea's Busan city is betting on its ports and infrastructure to turn a new shipping corridor into a wider strategy to becoming a global maritime capital.
For more I have Celio Fioretti with French daily La Croix.
Celio welcome back.
I also have Ruy Valdes with Spanish news agency EFE Spain.
Ruy it's good to have you here.

1) Celio, for viewers who may be hearing about this for the first time, let's begin with South Korea's decision to test the Northern Sea Route.
So first, what is the Northern Sea Route, and what exactly is South Korea testing?

2) Ruy, why is South Korea interested in sending ships through the Arctic when it already has established routes to Europe through the Suez Canal?

3) Celio, how much shorter or faster could the Arctic route really be, and what would that mean for a trade-dependent economy like South Korea?

4) Ruy, if the route is potentially so advantageous, why hasn't it already become a major alternative to Suez, and what are the practical obstacles to making Arctic shipping commercially reliable?

5) Celio, how significant is Busan in this strategy, and is Korea really trying to turn the city into a major gateway between Asia and this emerging Arctic trade route?

6) Ruy, South Korea is also one of the world's leading shipbuilders, so how could an expansion of Arctic shipping create opportunities not just for Korean ports but for the country's shipbuilding and maritime industries?

7) Celio, the biggest complication is that much of this route runs along Russia's Arctic coast, so how does South Korea reconcile its Arctic ambitions with Western sanctions and its alliance with the United States?

8) Ruy, China is already moving much more aggressively into Arctic shipping, so should we see South Korea's move as an economic opportunity, a strategic hedge against China, or both?

All right.
