S 45-15 is a photograph by Riccardo Varini from the series Silenzi Marine (Seascapes Silences).
In the Silenzi Marine (Seascape Silences) and Geometrie Marine (Seascape Geometries) series, the artist immortalises beaches and seaside resorts when visitors are rare, when the landscape once again becomes the main protagonist. In contrast to his winter series, where white dominates, here colours such as beige, azure and red appear delicately.
Riccardo Varini's photography is slow, made up of moments of stillness, emptiness and silence. His landscapes, imbued with a delicate poetry, become inner landscapes, evoking not specific memories but more universal emotions. The photographer invites the observer to indulge in quiet meditation, contemplation and dreaming. The subjects have lost their spatio-temporal connotations and appear suspended, as if out of time. The titles of Riccardo Varini's photographs bear no indication of place or date: the viewer's imagination and sensations are free to project themselves into the scenery and atmosphere presented to them.
The artist uses overexposure when shooting to achieve a restrained language of clear, luminous tones, in which only the essential is visible. The simplicity of lines, shapes and colors is combined with careful, long-studied composition. The photographs are personally printed by the artist on textured cotton paper, which gives the image a velvety matte effect that is visually similar to watercolor.
Riccardo Varini describes his artistic approach as follows: “My photography isn’t “shouted”. It's made up of pauses, religious silences, long, drawn-out periods and blurred lights. It's a slow photograph that invites you to contemplate... And if “il naufragar m'è dolce in questo mare” (“to be shipwrecked is sweet to me in this sea”, a line from one of Giacomo Leopardi's best-known poems, L’infinito), it wants to tend towards eternity, rather than memory.”
The 30 x 45 cm and 20 x 30 cm formats are printed with white margins of approximately 3 cm (1.5 cm on each side). Paper dimensions: 32.9 cm x 48.3 cm for the 30 x 45 cm format and 24.1 x 32.9 cm for the 20 x 30 cm format.
