Arc Angel Tesla Coil and myself have been playing around with ZVS direct driven self-oscillating “driverless” Tesla coils. These have been a lot of fun to mess with producing great arcs and strong RF fields which can light up nearby noble gas filled tubes and fluorescent bulbs with fascinating lighting effects. The great thing about them is low component count and ease of construction compared with classic SSTC type coils. We took it a step further and powered the coils with half-wave rectified mains from a variac to give nice “sword-arcs”. Arc-Angel took this even further and used an arduino driven buck converter to power the coils with longer “ramps” and in theory get longer arcs as the mains approach was limited by maximum 4 ms ramp provided by US 60 Hz mains. I was inspired to make this video after seeing his setup.
