Blackburn signed commanding centre back, Ryan Nelsen, on a free transfer in January 2005 following the end of his time as a DC United player. Brought in by Mark Hughes, the New Zealand international's immediate task was clear. Help keep Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League.

A disappointing first half of the 2004/05 campaign for Rovers had seen the club looking nervously towards the drop zone and Mark Hughes set about bringing in defensive reinforcements in the January window hoping to arrest the slide. Nelsen was signed along with Aaron Mokoena for a combined total of £300k, with Mokoena the man costing the fee. It is fair to say, both added the steel that Rovers desperately needed.

Nelsen made his Rovers debut at Fratton Park in a 1-0 Rovers win against Portsmouth in January 2005, playing in an unfamiliar right back role on the day. This was to be a rare occurrence, however, as Nelsen soon made the centre back position his own with a number of solid performances. He very quickly formed a no nonsense partnership at the heart of the defence with the equally robust Andy Todd. A pairing many strikers did not relish playing against.

The Kiwi made 20 appearances in all during his first half season as a Rovers player and helped Rovers to important wins over Norwich, Everton, Southampton and Crystal Palace as Rovers finished 15th in the Premier League. He also played a key role in leading Rovers to the FA Cup semi finals, where Rovers fell short against Arsenal in Cardiff.

The following season, the 2005/06 campaign, was to be a superb season for both Nelsen and Rovers as the club achieved a top 6 finish in the Premier League, European qualification, a League Cup semi final run and recorded impressive wins over big guns Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea.

Rovers managed to do the double over Ferguson's United that season, picking up their first win at Old Trafford in over 40 years and also hit four past them at Ewood Park on a memorable night in February 2006. Ryan Nelsen played an integral part in both victories, completing the full 90 in both whilst helping to keep the United attack at bay. Nelsen made 36 appearances in all during his first full season as a Blackburn Rovers player.

The 2006/07 season saw game time limited for Nelsen due to a serious thigh injury which kept him on the sidelines for the entire first half of the campaign. Nelsen made his first Rovers appearance that season in late January 2007 in an FA Cup tie at Luton. The same game also saw the introduction of Nelsen's new centre back partner, Chris Samba, who Rovers signed in January 2007 from Hertha Berlin. Nelsen would go on to make 19 appearances in the latter part of the 2006/07 season, with 12 of those coming in the Premier League. He was, however, able to feature in Blackburn's run to the FA Cup semi final, helping Rovers to beat Arsenal and Man City along the way.

Nelsen's importance to the Rovers side was highlighted by the fact that the club offered him a new five year deal in July 2007, which he signed, keeping him at Rovers until 2012.

With Andy Todd no longer at the club, it was time for Nelsen to forge a new partnership at the heart of the defence. Despite playing a few matches alongside Andre Ooijer, it was Big Chris Samba who stepped forward and made himself undroppable with a number of outstanding displays. With Nelsen already being a mainstay in the side, the new pairing was set. Blackburn fans, to this day, still talk glowingly about the Samba and Nelsen partnership. The dominating duo helped Rovers to a 7th place finish in the Premier League in May 2008 and put in many impressive performances up until both left the club in 2012.

Nelsen would go on to make a further 102 appearances for Rovers between the years 2008-2011, scoring an impressive eight goals. His first goal came during an important win against Wigan in April 2009. His last Rovers goal came in December 2010 against West Ham at Ewood Park. Nelsen left Rovers in February 2012 to join Spurs on a free, during a torrid time for Rovers on and off the pitch.

Ryan Nelsen is remembered as a fan favourite, a leader at the back, a quality defender who was one of the bargain finds of the Premier League era. A player that the Rovers fans miss seeing in the side today.

Nelsen made 208 appearances for Rovers in total during seven seasons and scored 8 goals. Here are those goals.
