Mortar artillery has long been a valuable asset for armies worldwide. It is inexpensive, easy to operate, and capable of delivering heavy payloads over relatively long distances, making it an ideal weapon for infantry units in need of additional firepower. However, traditional stationary mortar positions require setup time—though significantly less than other artillery pieces—which can limit their mobility and responsiveness.
To address this, many militaries, including the Soviet Union, explored the concept of mounting mortars on self-propelled platforms. In the early 1980s, the Soviets introduced the 2S9 "Nona-S", a 120 mm self-propelled mortar (SPM) designed for their Airborne Troops. However, the Soviet Ground Forces also sought a similar system for their own use. This led to the development and eventual adoption of the 2S23 "Nona-SVK", a more cost-effective, wheeled self-propelled mortar based on the BTR-80 amphibious armored personnel carrier. The 2S23 entered service in the early 1990s, and remains in use to this day.
