'Cheated of Childhood': In the wake of the Soviet Union’s collapse, a silent tragedy has unfolded across Russia: over 1 million children are now homeless. We follow Max (13) and Yuri (11) as they navigate a perilous existence sleeping in attics and basements to escape abusive parents like Yuri’s alcoholic stepfather. From the dangerous metro stations of St. Petersburg to the derelict car where Dima seeks refuge, these children face threats from predators and the constant fear of "reform schools." While social worker Vera Smeirnova and the Medsand Deond center fight to provide medical aid for rising HIV rates, the cycle of poverty and addiction remains a "threatening indicator" for the nation's future. This is a raw look at the kids who have been left behind by a changing world.
