Alexander Arguelles | Russian Soft Consonant Phonetic Drills Фонетические упражнения для мягких согласных в русском языке @ProfASAr | Uploaded June 2014 | Updated October 2024, 1 week ago.
Russian soft consonants are particularly difficult for me, as they are for most native English speakers. Practicing minimal pair distinctions under the guidance of a trained phonetician is probably the only way to improve their production. Here I get such guidance from my research partner, Professor Dina Nikulicheva of the Institute of Linguistics at the Russian Academy of Sciences. She employs a very kinesthetic style, which may not only be interesting to watch, but hopefully very useful to others who also struggle with Russian soft consonants.
Once again, I regret that I do not have the technical know-how to put subtitles on this film.
Yesterday I inadvertently made public a video of my learning process for this research and was happily surprised to find it generating positive interest. So, I have promised to make another such video in a few weeks time, showing a different rhythm of learning. For the time being, I am much more concerned with improving my structural and lexical knowledge of Russian, but once I have internalized most of the advanced Assimil manual, I will turn my time and attention to putting the exercises on this video of phonetic drills into practice.
