The Dvortsoviy Bridge also known as Palace Bridge takes its name after the Winter Palace, Dvortsovaya (Palace) Square and Embankment.
The first pontoon bridge connected Admiralteyskiy and Vasilievsky Isles in 1856 right in front of the Winter Palace, but in 1896-1897 the place was moved to the place where the Palace Bridge is located today. The permanent iron bridge was built in 1912-1916 by engineers A.Pshenitzkiy and R.Meltzer.
Interesting fact: some wood elements from bridge construction remained unchanged until 1978. Palace Bridge is technically the most perfect of all Neva bridges. The unique mechanism of a suspension bridge, consisting of a machine, colossal cogwheels (some complete cast metal in fixed block details of the bridge opening) and a floating bridge balancer weighing thousands of tons, allows lifting 700 tons of bridge span. In 1997, the Istana Bridge got colorful illuminations.
