What if therapy didn’t feel intimidating, but felt like coming home to yourself?
In this episode of Rural Unrecognized, released during Mental Health Awareness Month, host Jessica Janzen sits down with Krysta Rathwell, founder of KR Counselling and Psychotherapy in Forestburg, Alberta.
After 20 years in education, including time as a principal, Krysta followed her heart into full-time therapy practice. Now based in The Brick Centre in downtown Forestburg, she is helping make mental health support more accessible, approachable and understood in rural Alberta.
Krysta shares what led her into counselling, the difference between psychotherapists, psychologists, psychiatrists and counsellors, and why breaking the stigma around mental health matters so deeply in small communities.
This conversation also explores narrative therapy, self-care that actually serves you, setting boundaries, parenting in the digital age, rural isolation, and the simple phrase “that’s not my story” as a tool for protecting your peace.
It is an honest, practical and deeply meaningful conversation about slowing down, reaching out and taking care of your mental health one small, intentional step at a time.
