In 1975, The Runaway Train became a highlight of the Universal Studios Tour.

"Universal's Runaway Train, a nine-ton tribute to 'Casey Jones,' offers a heart-pounding encounter with a colossal locomotive that threatens any tram brave enough to cross its path."
— Inside Universal Studios, 1976

The Runaway Train, featuring its "animated train engineer," delivered a terrifying spectacle in the Denver Street area. During a particularly memorable period, the train conductor was dressed as Mr. T from "The A-Team" as part of a park-wide promotion.

Press Release from 1976
The runaway train instills fear in what was once a tranquil western town on Universal’s backlot. Visitors experience the menacing terror of a massive locomotive bearing down on any tram daring to cross its path.

Sound effects such as warning bells, steam whistles, and the clatter of the locomotive enhance the realism as the train barrels towards the tram at a "breakneck" speed of seven miles per hour. True to Hollywood tradition, the train halts just in the nick of time, ensuring the passengers' safety as the tram proceeds unharmed. Constructed by the electronic magicians in Universal Studios' Special Effects Department, the locomotive took four months to complete. It is powered by air motors and equipped with two braking systems. After the tram crosses safely, the train automatically reverses and is ready to repeat its dramatic approach in just two minutes.

The train ceased operation around 1985. Although it no longer actively targets the Studio Tour tram, the locomotive is still prominently visible on the Studio Tour. It is currently positioned on the Collapsing Bridge adjacent to King Kong 360 3D and was previously stationed at the Freight Train Station on Denver Street. Before its move to Denver Street, it remained in its final 'attack' position opposite Denver Street for many years.
