Run with me in the On Cloudsurfer Max. This shoe is the successor to the Cloud Eclipse, but On tells me that the rebrand is meant to bring this shoe under the Cloudsurfer silo (which I don’t think is all that necessary or helpful)
The Cloudsurfer Max does lose the torsion plate this year, and overall it’s analogous change from Cloudsurfer 1 to Cloudsurfer 2. The shoe is a bit less squishy and less lively. It does get interesting when picking up the pace a bit, like for a progression run or a long run with some faster miles. But for me it’s just not the same as last year.
I felt like the Cloudsurfer v1 (using American numbering here) and the Cloud Eclipse marked a new subdivision of On shoes meant to appeal to American preferences. But Cloudsurfer 2 and Cloudsurfer Max both feel like older On shoes just without the speedboard.
Overall, this is still good. Just not as good as it could have been.
