Rumba Madre’s David Viladieguez joins Event Santa Cruz for a conversation about punk, Latin music, world music, filmmaking and the story behind Rumba Madre.

Ahead of Rumba Madre’s performance at Midtown Fridays in Santa Cruz, David talks about the band’s unique mix of Latin and world folk music with punk, ska, salsa, Celtic music and influences from around the globe.

We also get into how Rumba Madre started in Nashville, David’s musical influences, the band’s goal of getting people dancing, and why humor and social commentary are such an important part of their music and videos.

David also talks about his work as a filmmaker and writer, including his book Spanish Punk: Screaming for Democracy in a Post-Dictatorial State, which explores punk music, politics and social movements in Spain following the Franco dictatorship.
