Captain John Leask, Captain of RRS James Cook, recalls when the Royal Research Ship assisted in the rescue of a French fishing vessel off the Isles of Scilly on 31st August 2022.
It received a distress call after the fishing vessel blacked out and began taking on water. Despite the best efforts of the crew with assistance from Falmouth Coast Guard, the decision was made to abandon ship and the 5 crew members were safely moved onboard another fishing vessel.
Throughout the operation, RRS James Cook and Captain Leask remained in contact with the coastguard as well as the crew on the fishing vessel.
