Linlithgow Palace was built around 1424 by King James I of Scotland on the site of an earlier royal residence destroyed by fire. It became a favorite home of the Stewart kings and queens for its beauty and central location. In 1542, Mary, Queen of Scots was born there, forever linking the palace to her tragic legacy.
