In the 1990s and early 2000s, NYC skateboarding thrived in a raw, unfiltered scene, with the Brooklyn Banks as its heart. Tucked under the Manhattan side of the Brooklyn Bridge, the Banks’ brick waves, stair sets, and ledges made it a proving ground for local legends and pros alike. The 1995 film Kids, directed by Larry Clark and starring real-life skaters like Harold Hunter and Justin Pierce, captured the era’s gritty, unsupervised energy, blurring the line between fiction and reality. As the 2000s progressed, the Banks remained iconic, featuring in videos from brands like Zoo York and 5boro, but in 2010, the city shut down much of the spot for bridge renovations. Though parts of it still exist, the golden age of NYC street skating lives on in its legacy.
