Roy Granger won three Michigan high school football state championships before he graduated: one as a freshman at Detroit St. Martin de Porres (1988), two more at Farmington Hills Harrison as a sophomore (1989)and a senior (1991).
He spent most of his career at wide receiver, but in 1991 Harrison moved Granger to tailback for his senior season. In his first game at the position, against Birmingham Brother Rice, a team that would compete in the Class A state final that season, he ran for 174 yards and four touchdowns.
The production held up all year. In Week 9, he ran for 183 yards and five touchdowns. Then came the playoffs: 264 yards and three touchdowns in the pre-regional final, 174 yards and two touchdowns in the regional final, 141 yards and three touchdowns in the semifinal, and 295 yards and two touchdowns in the state championship game. That’s 1,057 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns across five playoff games. For the season, in his only year at tailback, he finished with 2,023 rushing yards and 31 touchdowns.
His championship game set marks that stood as state records at the time: 295 rushing yards, 313 total yards, 337 all-purpose yards, and touchdown runs of 73 and 50 yards.
Granger was named to the Michigan Dream Team at running back and ranked the ninth-best Blue Chip prospect in the state for the class of 1992.
