Old-fashioned root beer used to use sassafras in it, but back in the 1960s, it was discovered to be cancerous and was banned for commercial use. Today, many people do not believe this, so here is a quick explanation on why the safrole in sassafras does cause cancer. Luckily, there is a substitute called sassafras acetate that smells similar to safrole and can be used safely in root beer type beverages.
