Rock & Rye became popular at the pharmacy as a "cough remedy" in the early 1880s because the manufacturers of this patent medicine didn’t have to pay taxes on the alcohol, nor did the sellers. Tolu was considered an anti-tussive (cough suppressant), so for a while, Rock & Rye was considered a cough syrup, but that only lasted a few years. Eventually, it became obvious that this was just a bottled Old Fashioned Cocktail, and the tax was applied to the product making it less appealing.

But Tolu Rock & Rye tastes pretty good and works well as a variation on the Old Fashioned.
