Contrary to popular belief, the ancient Romans *did* indicate long vowels with their version of the macron, called the apex. Latin has distinct "phonemic" long vowels, which are the most important part of the sound of Latin — not only in the Classical period, but through all ages of Latin literature. Don't believe me?
