We are rapidly approaching the 30 August 2026 planned launch date for NASA's Roman Space Telescope.

Unlike Webb or Hubble, this is a Wide Field Infrared Space Telescope (WFIRST) that will support research originally proposed under the Joint Dark Energy Mission with Destiny and SNAP.

You may think of the difference this way. Use of the Hubble Space Telescope would be like standing on a mountain peak with powerful binoculars focused on a single eagle soaring miles away to study its feathers in exquisite detail.

In contrast, the Roman Wide Field Infrared Space Telescope (WFIRST) would be more like photographing an entire mountain range from across the valley.

The Roman is thus fundamentally a cosmic surveyor viewing enormous areas all at once while still retaining remarkably fine resolution. This image pun is not random; it is yet another small element of a very large design.

More directly, however, this astronomical tool is named after the pioneering NASA astronomer Nancy Grace Roman, noted as the mother of the Hubble Space Telescope and for her research on Dark Energy.

One mission objective is for Roman to conduct repeated wide-field surveys in the hopes of finding many transient events, including stars disrupted by black holes. This effort could eventually distinguish competing explanations for how supermassive black holes rapidly grew in the early stages of this universe.

A SpaceX Falcon Heavy will loft Roman from Kennedy Space Center's 39A pad. This is because Roman is headed NOT to low Earth orbit, but to the Sun-Earth L2 Lagrange point, about 1 million miles from planet Earth. Reaching L2 requires significantly more energy and the Falcon Heavy has the performance margin to get Roman onto its transfer trajectory while carrying all the propellant the observatory will require for years of station-keeping around L2.
