This is my first song about ancient Rome. I wanted to make a piece of music that I could imagine being played by 2 musicians for a live audience somewhere in a Roman villa. A solemn and melancholic song telling of the past.
The song is named after the Roman province of Illyricum, which stretched along the Adriatic coast of modern day Croatia.
I tried to make this song as authentic as possible, I listened to a lot of modern reconstructions of what we believe ancient Roman music sounded like but I can't possibly claim that this is how their music really sounded, it's just my personal interpretation. I basically wanted to compose something that I feel would match into that time period and scenery when I close my eyes, that's it.^^
All music composed and arranged by Adrian von Ziegler.
The artwork is an old painting by the late Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema, it's called Sappho and Alcaeus (actually depicting a scene in ancient Greece as far as I know).
